....And Then There Is Pienza!

Pienza, a historical region and medieval jewel in the province of Siena, Tuscany. It is situated between the town s of Montepulciano and Montalcino and is a superb example of Renaissance architecture, surrounded by the wonderful hills of the Val d’Orcia. For many centuries, Pienza has inspired many poets, writers and artists, and it is also known as a romantic city because of its streets with ‘lovely’ names such as Via dell’Amore (love street) and Via del Bacio (kiss street).


The history of Pienza is closely linked to its founder, Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who was born there in 1405 from parents who were members of the noble Sienese family. At that time it was known as Corsignano then later renamed Pienza. Corsignano was a fortified village already known in Roman times which, even earlier, remote inhabitants had chosen as their primitive residence, leaving abundant traces of their passage, referable to the Upper Neolithic and Bronze Age.


In the culinary world, Pienza is known for its local pecorino, sheep’s milk cheese, which is found in many small shops in town. Firm cheese is aged from 6 to 18 months and used in many local dishes but is also very delicious all on its own!


Three of our very favorite villages in the Tuscan countryside - Montepulciano, Pienza, and Montalcino - each having a unique rustic atmosphere reflecting a humbler history much more closely tied to the rural culture of farming families and provincial nobility. Villages where the pace of life is slower and the days are dominated by good food and wine shared with family and friends.
