Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because there are no presents, no expectations - just a time when the entire family is together enjoying great food, stories, laughter, and simply being with people you love. This year will be the first time ever that our family - all 40 of us - cannot be together. It breaks our hearts but right now, we rather be apart and be safe so that we can celebrate together in the future.
Every year brings triumphs and struggles and 2020 has certainly been challenging and difficult, on so many different levels. And when there is constant worrying and issues, it’s hard to remember that life also has many blessings. We have a choice and mine is to reflect upon my every day blessings rather than focus on these challenging times. As Charles Dickens once said, “Reflect upon your blessing, of which every man has many - not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”
Believe that there is more good in this world. There is always a reason to be thankful and I couldn’t help to think of how truly fortunate and blessed I am for all that I have, especially my family and friends, who are always so supportive, respectful, kind and loving. And for my life experiences, which have taught me so many valuable lessons.
Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival but today, it is celebrated as a holiday for Giving Thanks and so I started writing a list of all that I am truly thankful for. My list was quite extensive but I narrowed it down a bit - 20 to be exact!
My family and friends - I could never get through this life without them.
My nephews and nieces that surround us with so much joy, love, and laughter.
Good health - life is truly fragile and short so live it.
Kindness of strangers - never take that for granted - there is always a valuable lesson.
Challenges - we all have them - they make us who we are.
Fresh air - being able to breathe in fresh air. There are those in this world that have no idea what that's like. Be thankful.
Time - we always think we don't have enough of it, but we actually really do. Grateful for the extra time I get to spend with my family.
Life changes - because they can lead to good things and perhaps be the blessing of a lifetime.
Soldiers - who are sacrificing their lives to save ours - so thankful for them.
My home, warm clothing and a bed to sleep in - I am so very thankful for these.
Early Morning walks - enjoying the cool air and quietness. They also keep me healthy.
The opportunity to slow down - it allows me to be more thoughtful of time and energy and reconnect with people.
Sunsets - enjoying the simple things in life.
Moon and Stars - be grateful you can see them - they spark our dreams.
Sunshine - the warmth of it can brighten a day.
Virtual celebrations - for bringing people closer together.
Online learning - an opportunity to learn new things.
Music - because of its natural healing power - nothing like it.
Love - it's what makes this world go round.
Laughter - something I can't live without - the world would be a sad place without it.
Be the reason someone smiles. Wishing all of you a Happy and Joyous Thanksgiving!
