Keeping Traditions Alive… It’s Time For Tomato Sauce!

It’s that time again…. time to make the tomato sauce! An unforgettable tradition that has endured for centuries. An Italian ancient ritual that is repeated year after year, with each family having their own recipe that has been handed down from one generation to the next.

Towards the end of every summer, my family and I spend sunrise to sunset making tomato sauce for the year so that we could enjoy the delicious flavor of tomatoes during the cold months, and then some!

It is a tradition that unites family and friends who gather to help, and some join us just for the experience. Tasks are divided and then rotated, giving everyone a chance to learn various steps to this process. It is certainly hard work, but all well worth it.

Of course, we eat along the way… one of our favorites is the famous Neapolitan street food called ‘pizzelle fritte’ (fried mini pizzas) with fresh tomato sauce and grated parmigiano. These delightful and especially appetizing mini fried pizzas were born in the poorest neighborhoods of Naples and sold to those passing by, eventually becoming a sensational Neapolitan street food. We also love the classic, ‘bruschette al pomodoro,’ or bruschetta with tomato and basil, a popular combination that pairs toasted homemade bread topped with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, and olive oil, and naturally, we end the day with spaghetti and fresh tomato sauce!

Traditions are part of our culture and they remind us that we are part of a history that shapes who we are today. Traditions are what create lasting memories for our families and friends, so keep them alive!

Have an amazing week everyone!
