About Porto Ercole

Porto Ercole is known as a secret coastal getaway. It is a small, delightful seaside town on the Argentario promontory off the Tuscan coast. A paradise of rugged green hills, hidden coves, and natural harbors. Named for Hercules, the mythical son of Zeus, and has a history that reaches back to the Phoenicians, the Etruscans, and the Romans.

The town has a strong fishing tradition, a trade that continues today. The historic center of Porto Ercole is a delightful stone village that rests below the walls of the Rocca Spagnola. Enter the historic center through the old Porta Pisana, the ancient city gate, and wander through the warren of narrow streets, staircases, and piazzas, that make up the old part of the city. It is a pedestrian-only place, so you’ll hear only the sea and the jolly voices of the locals instead of traffic and clamor.

If you have the opportunity to arrive a few days earlier, we highly recommend you spend a day or two in Porto Ercole prior to our sailing adventure.

About the Monnalisa

The Monnalisa: A private, 45 Foot Sailboat with a capacity of 12 guests between the 4 cabins, 2 bathrooms with showers and a comfortable dinette area at your disposal. This sloop sailing boat is the first 45 foot 5 Beneteau armed with a mainsail, genoa sail, and gennaker sail.

What are the different types of sails? Most sailboats have one mainsail and one headsail. Typically, the mainsail is a fore-and-aft bermuda rig (triangular shaped). A jib or genoa is used for the headsail. Most sailors use additional sails for different conditions: the spinnaker (a common downwind sail), gennaker, code zero (for upwind use), and storm sail.
